The telecom operators in South East Asia, Oceania and India are accelerating their journey towards 5G. It is essential now to deliver on the promise of transformation for the leading operators in the region. Their journey towards becoming a digital player demands embracing new business models, and transforming business, IT and network capabilities to deliver new levels of agility.

This year the TM Forum’s flagship conference for Asia, Digital Transformation Asia brought together industry thought leaders and experts to share their experiences and explore how to unlock the value of new technologies such as IoT, 5G, AI and Blockchain. Hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia the event has attracted over 1000 delegates this year with representation from Government, service providers, network and IT players and others.

Malaysia’s Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo announced an open data exchange platform for the country in collaboration with Malaysia’s Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) and Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP). The service providers on their part reflected on the need to identify and build on new revenue streams and focus areas.

With 5G and IoT coming in a major way, the conversations ranged from massive data traffic levels to digital lifestyle of consumers and the overall journey from a “traditional telco” to a “digital telco”. Another important track of conversation through out the event has been on the role of BSS in emerging revenue streams and the importance of API enabled open architecture and ecosystem level partnerships.

In his keynote presentation,Alvise Carlon, Head of Digital Services, Ericsson South East Asia, Oceania & India spoke about the key digital strategies towards 5G. Carlon shared that winning at the digital edge means to be profitable and relevant in the customer centric and digital era. Ongoing digitalization is driving new opportunities and investments for service providers. Mastering the digital era is about creating digital engagements, automating operations and programmable networks.

 

Ericsson also signed an MoU with Axiata’s Apigate to create next generation API driven digital solutions. The partnership will facilitate collaborations between both companies and is aimed at creating digital API driven business solutions that effectively address the digital transformation needs of telecommunication service providers.“

This partnership is emblematic of our vision for digital transformation and our flexible, open-source platform can empower operators to build faster, more efficient partnerships and path the way to capitalize on revenue opportunities,” said Zoran Vasiljev, CEO of Apigate about the partnership.
