In a recent article in Ericsson Business Review, Mariette Lehto lays out the four essential phases that a cloud strategy should cover. In my last post, I highlighted what Lehto had to say about what your organization needs to do to win the cloud game. Now let's look at her strategy:
Step 1: Define
Prioritize defining business objectives. Once in place, break these down into business requirements supported by KPIs and robust impact analyses. If business objectives are contradictory, prioritize. Is fast time-to-market worth the risk of service-quality problems? Aggressive efficiency programs can leave enterprises scrambling to catch up in terms of capabilities.
Step 2: Plan
A cloud implementation plan should address all operational levels. This includes people, business, process, and infrastructure.
Step 3: Implement
Cloud complexity is increasing. While some complex processes can be can be moved to cloud, new skills and capabilities will be needed for cloud management. During implementation, enterprises will need to align infrastructure such as legacy systems, compliance with laws and regulations, and security requirements for a successful cloud rollout.
Step 4: Monitor
It goes without saying that following up on progress, quantifying business impact, and defining what needs to be improved is critical. Ask yourself: are business targets being met? How can gaps be filled?
