Ericsson virtual Evolved Packet Gateway (vEPG) is a main node in the Ericsson Evolved Packet Core solution: the heart of mobile broadband. We tested our cloud-optimized vEPG on the recently launched Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor and the result is impressive: a throughput of 40Gbps per processor.
Supercharging the Evolved Packet Gateway
Ericsson has historically excelled in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) market with first-to-market product deployments, leading edge customer applications, and technology leadership in standards bodies. It has been at the forefront of technological advances such as enabling 50 million Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a single virtual EPC instance, with full session resilience. In keeping with its tradition of delivering continuous scale and performance advances, Ericsson is now delivering the results of supercharging the packet throughput performance of the Evolved Packet Gateway (EPG).
The tests we have done show a vEPG performance rate of as much as 40Gbps per CPU. We simulated a large-scale radio network with 2.6 million mobile broadband subscribers, 15kbps average speed per user and, consistent with the mobile broadband traffic model, an average packet size of 650 bytes. We used 100 percent deep packet and header inspection. In other words, these were very rigorous conditions, not a setup "tweaked" to provide unrealistically exceptional results.
We believe the Ericsson Evolved Packet Gateway offers the best performance available on the market today, both as physical network function and virtual network function, at least doubling the authentic "real-world" performance of any other packet gateway available today. It’s not just about forwarding packets at extreme rates, though. Network operator value is realized by enabling node count reductions, lowering the costs to provision mass-market virtualized services, and preparing for the migration to 5G with split control and user plane operation.
